Hollingworth Lake Visitor Centre commemorate the 14.6 million people who died during the course of World War One

Hollingworth Lake Visitor Centre has created a display in the main car park to commemorate the 14.6 million people who died during the course of World War One.

The planting scheme, which was devised and produced by Countryside Ranger Richard Whittle and volunteer Jacqueline Nicholson, contains 146 poppies with every one poppy representing 100,000 people.

The scheme helped Hollingworth Lake Country Park to gain a Level 4 (Thriving) award at the recent North West in Bloom 'It’s Your Neighbourhood' awards in Southport.

The Visitors Centre is also currently holding an exhibition of photographs showing the camp at Hollingworth Lake that was set up by a number of Territorial Battalions from the Manchester Regiment.

In August 1914, a number of Territorial Battalions from the Manchester Regiment were camped at Hollingworth Lake in order to make final preparations before joining the war in France. However, in the September, they received orders that would send them to Egypt for further training before entering the war, alongside the Lancashire Fusiliers, at Gallipoli in 1915.

The exhibition has been put together by Ranger Judy Alderson with contributions by other members of the Ranger Service.
