Simon Danczuk MP on the death of Joel Barnett

Date published: 04 November 2014

Statement from Simon Danczuk MP on the death of Joel Barnett: “I was saddened to hear that Joel Barnett passed away over the weekend.

Joel did a fantastic job representing Heywood and Royton in Parliament for 19 years and continued to be a champion of social justice and fairness in the House of Lords.

Joel represented Wardle and Littleborough in my constituency and I know he is fondly remembered there. We were all pleased to see him recently granted the freedom of the borough of Rochdale, it was a fitting testament to his hard work on behalf of local people.

Whilst Joel will chiefly be remembered for the Barnett Formula and his role in the Callaghan Government, I will remember him as a lovely man and a source of great wisdom and experience at the times when I had chance to speak to him on the train or in Parliament.

All our thoughts are with his daughter Erica and his family and friends.”
