Greater Manchester is to get is own directly elected mayor with powers over transport, housing, planning and policing – something Councillor Ashley Dearnely agrees with.
Commenting on the proposals, Councillor Dearnley, Leader of the Conservative Party in Rochdale, said: “I think it is a good thing as it will give more power to the area. I fully support the plan as Rochdale will be given more power from central government so I think it is a good thing for the town.”
Announced today by Chancellor George Osborne, the measure is the latest initiative in his plans to create a northern powerhouse to maximize the economic potential of the North.
The proposals set out by the Chancellor also include devolving further powers to the Greater Manchester Combined Authority including over support for business growth, skills and help to join up health and social care budgets.
