Operation in Rochdale town centre

On 30 and 31 October 2014 Rochdale North Neighbourhood Policing team carried out an operation in Rochdale town centre, looking to combat street drinking and anti-social behaviour in the town centre.

The operation utilised a dispersal zone and dispersal powers, introduced by the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, and it is the first time the powers had been used in the Rochdale borough.

Dispersal Powers replace the Section 30 Dispersal Order and Section 27 Direction to leave. They require a person committing, or likely to commit, antisocial behaviour, crime or disorder to leave an area for up to 48 hours. Use of the dispersal power must be authorised by an officer of at least the rank of inspector before use. A police officer (or PCSO where designated) can give a direction to anyone who is, or appears to be, over the age of 10.

The powers are designed to provide better protection for victims and communities, as well as acting as a real deterrent to offenders, and will ensure that incidents of ASB can be dealt with quickly and easily.
