National Coming Out Day and Hate Crime Awareness Week
Date published: 12 October 2014
The Lesbian and Gay Foundation (LGF) hosted an event to mark National Coming Out Day and Hate Crime Awareness Week yesterday (Saturday 11 October).
The event, at Number One Riverside, was an afternoon of learning, sharing and celebrating the diverse community.
Guest speakers included Matthew Jackson who spoke to audiences about coming out as gay and Dawn Pomfret who discussed her experiences as a transgender person.
Penny Butterworth, Supervisor for the Ground Floor of Number One Riverside, who was overseeing the event, said: “It has been a good event. There has been a lot going on in town today so it has been good to be able to hold this event as well.”
The event included a variety of agencies offering help, support and advice, guest speakers sharing their life journeys and music and activities.
Penny added: “We are really pleased that we have been able to hold the event here. It is good to highlight National Coming Out Day and Hate Crime Awareness Week.
“We would definitely hold the event here again if the opportunity came up. This is the first one we have held but it is the fifth event held by the LGF and it has gone down really well.”
