Date published: 11 October 2014
A woman was raped in an alleyway off Bury Road in the early hours of this morning.
Shortly after 4.30am (Saturday 11 October), police were called after a 24-year-old woman was raped in an alleyway off Bury Road, Rochdale.
The victim is currently being supported by specially trained officers and an investigation is under way.
Detectives are now investigating and are advising women in the area to take sensible precautions.
Detective Inspector Lee Hopwood, based at Rochdale, said: "This is an awful incident and we have assigned specially trained officers to help the victim get through her ordeal.
"The local community will be shocked to hear what has happened but I can reassure them we have increased the number of police in the neighbourhood. If you have any concerns, please do not be afraid to speak to your local officer.
“I would also advise people to take some sensible precautions, such as sticking to well-lit areas and always being aware of your surroundings.
"I would ask anyone who witnessed the attack to please get in touch. Were you driving or walking near to where the incidents took place and see anything suspicious? We believe a man may have been walking near to where the incident took place and I would appeal for him to come forward to let us know if he saw anything."
Anyone with information should phone police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 55 111.
