Local cartoonist Joe Matthews meets Colin Baker

Date published: 04 October 2014

Local cartoonist Joe Matthews met up with time-travelling Rochdalian, Colin Baker, at Stoke’s first Comic and Sci-Fi Convention. Joe was invited to attend the event to promote his new Funny Monsters Comic and do sketches for visitors in their ‘Artists Corridor’. He was also asked to produce and donate an original artwork of one of the celebrity guests, to be auctioned for charity.

Joe chose the sixth Doctor Who actor, Colin Baker, because of his Rochdale background. “When he saw my portrait of him, we had a good chat. Colin spoke fondly of his childhood in Rochdale, telling me where he lived and went to school, and how the theatre started his love of acting. He asked me to give his love to the people of Rochdale, and if the Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre host another Dale-Con, he’d love to attend.”

Colin loved Joe’s Funny Monsters Comic which is being produced with Sunshine Snacks Ltd, the Rochdale sweet company. Sunshine Snacks has packed the comic in a bag with sweets, stickers and trading cards and has started distribution to over 3,000 shops in the North West and Midlands.

Sunshine Snacks MD Shahid Ahmed said: “We’re really happy to work with Joe on this exciting venture, he’s a great artist and kids love his Funny Monsters characters. Initial sales have been good so the future looks very positive.”

Joe will be appearing at the Rochdale Comic Book Show on the 26 October in the Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre selling Funny Monsters Comic and doing sketches of comic character Zackster Kid Zombie. He will also be appearing at George Kelsall’s Bookshop in Littleborough on Friday 31 October between 1pm and 4pm.
