Norden United Reformed church closes
Date published: 22 September 2014
Norden United Reformed Church, which has been part of the community for more than 100 years, has had to close due to dry rot.
Ian Sturrock from the church said: “Unfortunately the church was suffering from premises problems and the cost was too much to repair the problems.”
The church had its final service yesterday (Sunday 21 September) and even though it was a sad day for those attending the church, it was a packed service.
“It was a good service. There were a good number of people that turned up, including people from Bamford. It was certainly a sad day and there were lots of tears.
“The church will definitely be missed in the community because for some people it has been a big part of their lives,” said Ian.
Now that the church has closed, the congregation of Norden United Reformed Church will be joining with Bamford Chapel – also a United Reformed Church.
Ian added: “They are our sister church so we will be coming together with Bamford.”
The future of Norden United Reformed Church is currently unclear.
“I imagine it will be put up for sale in the near future but for the time being it is staying open as there are a number of organisations still in there. Once we find someone who can afford it, then we will know more about what will happen,” said Ian.
A service will be held at Bamford Chapel on Sunday 5 October at 10:30am to unite the two churches.
