Morrisons coming to Rochdale Town Centre

Date published: 08 September 2014

Morrisons are preparing to open a store in Rochdale Town Centre.

The supermarket chain is hoping to develop a site on Smith Street into an M local store – a convenience style store that lets customers travelling through the town centre, working in the town centre and commuting via the bus station and tram stop to shop in the supermarket.

It is understood that approval for the planning application for an M local store has been given and that the development would be around three quarters of the currently hoarded site and not the entire hoarded site.

Councillor Richard Farnell, Leader of Rochdale Borough Council, said: “The fact that a well-known national name like Morrisons is choosing to bring their business to Rochdale is great news for the town centre. It’s highly encouraging and shows the level of confidence the business community has in our regeneration plans.

“This follows hot on the heels of Tetrasyl announcing their international head office will be relocating to Rochdale, and we are expecting even more businesses to follow suit in the coming months.”

A spokesperson for Morrisons said: “We’re in the early stages of planning to bring a Morrisons M local to Rochdale. We look forward to updating the community further as things progress and hope to be a positive addition to the area.”
