Demolition update: the changing face of Rochdale town centre

Date published: 08 September 2014

Good progress is being made with the demolition of the Black Box, which started in June.

The building is shrinking as it is deconstructed floor by floor and the contractors, Connell Brothers, are currently removing the seventh floor of the 13 storey building. Once the levels reach the fourth floor then the nibblers move in.

The demolition is expected to be complete in October.

The sites of the former Broadwater Centre and the former St Andrew's Church have now been tarmaced ready to be used as a car park.

The demolition of these buildings will make way for the new Town Centre East retail and leisure development which will sit alongside the new Transport Interchange and Metrolink stop. Until the redevelopment of the site takes place temporary footpaths will be created across the site where the Black Box was located and temporary car parking will be created on the old bus station/multi storey car park site. The temporary footpaths and car park are expected to be complete before Christmas.
