Heywood Charities Fete and Parade

Date published: 08 September 2014

The sun shone on Heywood yesterday (Sunday 7 September) as people lined the streets and filled Queen’s Park for the annual Heywood Charities Fete and Parade.

Starting on Sefton Street, the parade saw a number of local organisations and residents kick-start the event. The parade then headed down Manchester Street, Hartley Street and York Street before heading into Queen’s Park.

Once in the park, charities lined the paths including the MS Society, Marie Curie Cancer Care and Rochdale Lions.

Queens Park was also filled with fairground rides, carnival games, activities and performances from Accrington Pipe Band and local organisations on the bandstand.

George Kinder, from the Rotary Club, said: “The day has been fantastic. The parade was miles long and looked brilliant and in the park we have 50% more stalls than we did last year. It just gets better and better and we hope we can continue to get bigger and better over the coming years.”

Councillor Ray Dutton, Chairman of the Heywood Township Committee, added: “I didn’t think it could get better than last year but it did. However it is tinged in a little bit of sadness with the news of MP Jim Dobbin's passing. It was sad to walk past his office and to know that he couldn’t be here but he would have wanted today to go on no matter what.”

The Charities Fete Committee comprises of individuals from Heywood and members of groups in Heywood including, Rotary, Lions, Scouts, Guides and the Business Group.

Money raised at the fete is then distributed between a number of charities throughout the upcoming year.
