David Acton from Rochdale Rotary Club, UrbanFarm and Rotary International have developed the cassette planter, which simplifies growing fruit and vegetables in vertically hung bags.
The cassette planter was developed as part of their World Wide Accessible Edibles Project.
The planter is an assembly of parallel bars and custom designed polythene hammocks, which fit across the parallel bars to support the polythene cassettes, which in turn accommodate the growing medium and plants.
Compared to existing planters, it has many groundbreaking advantages: slugs cannot attack the plants, plants cannot bend or grow weeds, less water is needed to maintain the plants and there is no need for any heavy lifting or digging.
David said: “We recently won £200 from Asda with Redwood School. We’re looking to put some planters up there soon as they are great for disabled children.”
“The planters can also benefit the elderly as there is no need to bend over or do any heavy lifting. The planter can be set at any height for easy access.”
The planters are currently installed at MIND in the Growth Project nursery.
