The Rotary Club of Heywood has erected signs on the M62, J19 Roundabout to welcome people into Heywood, to promote the Rotary Club of Heywood and to put Heywood on the map.
Dave Logan, from the Rotary Club of Heywood, said: “It was always something we wanted to do. We thought it would be a good way to promote the Rotary Club as well as promoting Heywood. It is also a good way of putting Heywood on the map.”
The signs have been paid for by the Rotary Club and their installation was achieved after considerable negotiation by Rotarians Mike Goldrick, Peter Rush and Dave Logan.
Mike Goldrick said: “It looks a lot better now and we are really pleased with the signs. We wanted to create a gateway for Hopwood but the work has not finished yet.”
The design of the signs includes a monkey with ten other monkeys also given a home in Heywood.
“Heywood is known as monkey town so we wanted to include that with the signs. I have ten other monkeys sat in my office waiting to go out in to Heywood,” said Mike.
The club then had to meet with the council to get the work approved before going ahead with the signs.
Mike added: “Without the help of the Councillors for Hopwood, these signs wouldn’t have gone ahead so we have to thank Carol Wardle, Susan Emmott and Linda Robinson as well.”
The Rotary Club of Heywood now has around £3,000 left out of the money they raised to spend. They plan to plant poppy seeds, create a cover for an air raid shelter and plant the Heywood coat of arms in marigolds.
