Rochdale Transport Interchange wins Project of The Year Award

Rochdale’s new transport interchange won the Lancashire Regional Project of The Year Award at the North West Regional Construction Awards event.

The interchange was also highly commended in the awards’ Project of the Year category.

The event, was held at the Palace Hotel in Manchester, aims to celebrate the achievements of the region's best and most innovative construction projects.

Rochdale Interchange was recognised for providing high quality facilities and improved safety and security for bus passengers as well as linking with the new Metrolink extension.

Opened on Sunday 17 November 2013, the interchange was Europe’s first transport hub to have an integrated hydropower source.

TfGM Committee Chairman, Councillor Andrew Fender, said: “I am delighted that the interchange was recognised by industry experts as a high quality and well-designed construction project.

“Not only does it provide transport users with better links between rail, bus and Metrolink services as well as improved passenger facilities, accessibility, information, safety and security, it also provides a provide a fantastic, modern gateway for the town centre.

“It has been built in a highly sustainable way and is also a European first, thanks to its innovative hydropower plant.”
