Wardle Academy students get a taste of college life

Fifty Year 11 students from Wardle Academy have visited Rochdale Sixth Form College (RSFC) to see what life would be like if they chose to study at the College.

The students sampled classes in both Biology and English. The English group looked at The Great Gatsby, one of the novels on the AS level syllabus. They learnt about narrative techniques such as scene-setting, characterisation, and narrative voice.

In the master class for Biology they learnt about nervous synaptic transmission and worked in small groups to find out and discuss the action of drugs at the synaptic cleft and the affects this has on the body.

Julian Appleyard, Principal at Rochdale Sixth Form College, said: “It was great having the Year 11 students from Wardle Academy with us for an afternoon to sample lessons at RSFC. We always enjoy meeting and giving prospective students a real taste of life at the college.

“Choosing where to study for A-Levels is an extremely important decision and through taster afternoons like this, we’re able to give students a greater understanding of the options available after GCSEs. We hope to welcome many of them back here in September 2014.”
