Go Green for Springhill Hospice

Date published: 14 March 2014

Springhill Hospice are asking the people of Rochdale to go green for a day of fund raising. The hospice, which is celebrating 25 years this year, is holding a Go Green for Springhill Hospice day on Friday 16 May.

The team at the hospice are looking for people to fund raise by incorporating the colour green. This could involve dressing up in green, wearing green accessories or baking green coloured cakes.

The aim of the fund raising event is to empower everyone in Rochdale, giving people the opportunity to donate a small amount with the knowledge that the accumulative effect will make a huge difference to Springhill Hospice.

Springhill Hospice Community Fundraiser, Lillie Winterbottom said: “If everyone in Rochdale donated £1 to Springhill Hospice on Go Green Day, a relatively small amount of money, then we would raise over £200,000.”

The fund raising day will also be to educate people about Springhill Hospice. Lillie added: “This fund raising day is also a brilliant opportunity to educate people as to what we’re all about, perhaps dispelling a few myths at the same time. Questions most requently asked of me include 'is the Hospice a depressing place?' and 'how much does it cost to use the Hospice?' The whole of the fundraising team relish the opportunity to tell people the answers to these questions and more, because in truth, it is not a depressing place and our services are provided completely free of charge.”

A number of schools and local businesses have already signed up to take part in the with further support being pledged from Rochdale Council, Rochdale Hornets and the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.

Staff and volunteers at the Hospice will also be going green on the day. “I can’t wait to see what they come up with but even if they simply buy and wear one of our Go Green t-shirts, this will be their small contribution,” said Lillie.

It costs nearly £3m a year to keep the doors of Springhill Hospice open. The Hospice, which provides palliative end of life care, day facilities, Hospice at Home and bereavement counselling services to the people of Rochdale and the surrounding areas, currently receives a third of their running costs from the NHS.

The outstanding £2m then comes directly from donations, legacies, third party fund raising events and indirectly from people donating or buying items from the seven Springhill Hospice charity shops across the borough.

Further information regarding the event will be available shortly with leaflets being dispatched via post and email. Volunteers will also be visiting businesses, schools and community facilities to talk to people about the event.

Lillie added: “This event promises to put the fun back into fund raising and unite our community for one very special cause. Springhill Hospice is here for the community and we are really hoping that the community will be here for Springhill.”
