Students jet off to explore Iceland

Date published: 16 February 2014

Geography and Science students from Rochdale Sixth Form College packed their bags and jetted off on a trip to Iceland as part of their studies.

More than 25 students travelled to see the spectacular natural features in Iceland. They travelled around the South Western part of the country to visit the geysers, the Gullfoss waterfall and the Thingvellir area - home to Iceland’s first parliament.

The students were then able to see the separation of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates that marks the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and after two nights of disappointment, the students finally witnessed the magnificent Northern Lights in Reykjavik.

Thomas Lord, a student at Rochdale Sixth Form College, said: “Going to Iceland was an opportunity I couldn’t miss - the Northern Lights were fantastic and as a Geography student being able to view the tectonic landscapes we had discussed in class in real life was great.”
