Christmas started in Rochdale yesterday (Saturday 16 November) with the Christmas lights switch on taking place.

The lights were officially turned on at 5:30pm by Coronation Street star Katie McGlynn and Councillor Cecile Biant.

Katie, from Littleborough, said: “It went really well. There was a really good atmosphere and everyone looked like they were enjoying it.

"It sounds silly but I am quite honoured to have turned the lights on in my home town.”

Councillor Biant, who replaced Mayor Peter Rush at the last minute, said: “It was great. It was really fun and it is nice to see people come out and support Rochdale.”

The event began with a parade from Yorkshire Street, which was lead by Mayor Peter Rush and Chief Executive of Town Centre Management, Debbie Hernon.

The parade also included local schools carrying home-made lanterns, members of Skylight Circus and pantomime stars Amy Forrest and Simon Blake.

The parade arrived at the Butts where entertainment was provided at the community stage to the ever-growing crowd. The crowd was treated to performances from the Rock Choir, Middleton Popstars Academy and Small World Choir. Skylight Circus also performed spectacular stunts before the lights switch on.

Rachel Saunders, who attends the event every year, said: “It is nice to see people come out in Rochdale.”

Roxanna Cavaleru who attended the event for the first time said: “It has been really nice. It is my first time and I have enjoyed it.”

Pantomime Star Simon Blake, who will be starring in Aladdin with Amy Forrest throughout December, said: “We have received a warm reception and today has been lots of fun.”

Amy Forrest, who will be starring as Princess Jasmine, added: “I have loved everything about today. It has been lots of fun and everyone looks like they have really enjoyed themselves.”

Chief Executive of Town Centre Management, Debbie Hernon said: “I have loved it. It has been a fantastic event and we have received positive feedback from lots of people.”
