Children's poetry competition

Date published: 16 November 2013

Children across the borough are being invited to write a poem of twelve lines based on a chosen nativity scene.

The scenes children can choose from are:

• The Angel tells Mary that she is going to have baby, Gods son.
• The Angel tells Joseph that it is ok to marry Mary.
• Mary and Joseph set off to Bethlehem: there is no room in the inns.
• Jesus is born in Bethlehem.
• The Angel tells the shepherds about Jesus.
• Wise men follow a star to find the new baby King.
• The Shepherds and Kings give their gifts to Jesus.

Town centre chaplain Margaret Smith said: “We thought it would be a good way to let the children be creative, it follows on nicely from the literature festival and it can help children with their curriculum at school.”

Poems must be accompanied by the child’s name, age, contact address/email address, telephone contact and a parent or guardians signature.

Closing date for the competition is Thursday 5 December with winners being told the week beginning Monday 9 December. Prizes will be awarded to the winners on Friday
13 December.

Depending on the number of entries received, entries will be split into relevant age categories and prizes will be given out according to those categories. Prizes will
include books and Christmas gifts.

Entries for the competition will be displayed in the Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre.

“The winners will definitely be displayed but depending on how many we receive, all other entries will be displayed one way or another” said Margaret.

Entries can be submitted to Rev Margaret Smith, Town Centre Chaplaincy, Champness Hall, Drake Street, OL16 1PB.
