Robber chased by members of staff

Date published: 15 October 2013

A would-be robber tripped over his own bike and lost a shoe when being chased away by brave members of staff at the shop he targeted.

At about 6.15am on Saturday 21 September 2013, the man rode up to Amin News on Market Street, Heywood, left his bike outside and went in.

Brandishing a large knife, he demanded cash, but two members of staff chased him out of the store.

The offender tripped over the bike, catching his shoe, which came off. Still with his other shoe on, the man ran onto Mission Street and then Fox Street.

He is described as being white, in his early 20s, about 5ft 7in tall and of slim build. His face was completely covered with a scarf. He wore a hooded jacket.

Detective Constable Daniel Daly said: "This has to be one of the most idiotic attempts to steal cash from a shop that I can remember.

"But we are appealing for information to help trace this man because his stupidity does not blind us to just how serious an incident this actually was.

"It was the only thanks to the bravery of the shopkeepers that meant the man got away empty handed without anyone being hurt.

"Furthermore, he was carrying a large knife which could easily have caused serious injury.

"The communities of Heywood will never tolerate intimidation of this nature, where thieves think they can make a quick buck just by walking into a shop and making threats.

"While we have made a number of detailed enquiries, we urge any witnesses to call us as soon as possible."

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 0161 856 8742 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
