Cop crimes revealed within GMP

Assault, drink-driving and misconduct in public office are all crimes committed by... serving Greater Manchester Police officers.

A freedom of information request revealed 26 serving officers have criminal records dating from 2006-2013.

Assault features on the record of four officers, and two have been convicted of assault inside a police vehicle. Two have convictions for drink driving, and two more were convicted of driving without due care and attention — one case involving an officer on duty, in a police car.

The most common offence was for speeding: six were caught exceeding the limit.

Three officers were caught driving without insurance and two without a licence.

Chief Inspector Michael Dawson of GMP’s Professional Standards Branch, said: “When a police officer or staff member is involved in a criminal incident, the matter is thoroughly investigated.

“With more than 7,000 police officers, in real terms the 26 with a conviction represent a tiny percentage. The majority of the convictions are for traffic-related offences.

“Each incident is dealt with on a case-by-case basis and looks at the individual circumstances.”
