All Greek at Touchstones

Date published: 09 October 2013

A stunning Grecian vase collection was the inspiration for a Herculean ‘Greek Day’ at Touchstones Rochdale.

Ian Tully enthralled 75 children from Crossgates Primary in workshops on ancient Greek life. The children also embarked on their own personal odyssey by going on an ‘epic’ journey of discovery throughout the displays at Touchstones Rochdale.

The children had a great time unravelling the mysteries of the past, teacher Caroline Leach, summed up the ‘Ancient Greek Life’ workshop by saying: “Ian Tully was fantastic, the time went really quickly and we were all absolutely enthralled.”

Touchstones Rochdale worked in partnership with Leeds University Classics Department. Lecturers' Dr Regine May and Dr Eleanor O’Kell were so impressed with Touchstones' Greek collection that they were inspired to create a session focusing on Touchstones' Greek vases to complement the Ancient Greek Life workshop.

The Arts & Heritage Service’s Education Co-ordinator Karen Vine said: “The Leeds University Classics department is particularly keen to share their enthusiasm for the ancient world with the wider community, so we plan to continue the relationship to work on other projects using our Greek collections as the stimulus for lots more learning at Touchstones”.
