Redwood achieves Gold Kitemark – School Games

I am delighted to let parents and carers know that following an external validation, Redwood has achieved the Gold Kitemark from School Games. The feedback stated that Redwood offers excellent opportunities to pupils and there are areas of very good practice for pupils to get involved with. The range of extra curricular activities was highlighted and also the commitment of all staff in sports activities and training. We are delighted with the award and it acknowledges the hard work by the staff to achieve this award! Well done to all concerned.

Sixth Form

In Vocational Educational, Ragnar, Billie and Ryan visited Rochdale Leisure Centre and enjoyed a tour. Students looked at all the new facilities and activities on offer and came back with loads of freebies.

Mitchell, Abbey, Aqsa, Iram, Qudsiyyah, Polly and Andrew went out to Asda supermarket as part of their Personal Independence Programme. The aim of the visit was to behave appropriately in public, read social sight signs, to look and find items and choose a drink and pay for it in the café. Everybody did extremely well and enjoyed accessing their local community. Well done everyone.

Students Council Elections took place on Wednesday. Students all did their bit to elect a new Student Council. Well done to Kyle, Sandra, Mark, Tommy, Dayle and Paul for being elected. You have got a very important job ahead of you this year. We wish you all the best.

KS3

Patrick and Saleem have successfully passed their test to become wheelchair facilitators, they can now help to push pupils who use wheelchairs to and from their classrooms and help out in the morning on arrival into school. Well done to them both!
Key Stage 3 has been “caught” welcoming people as part of the assembly target. Mr Hall has had to give out lots of certificates.

In a practice fire alarm this week Natasha coped extremely well in which was a very difficult situation for her.

Dwayne, Corey and Sabrina supported a Macmillan coffee morning at Crossgates school, they enjoyed drinking cups of tea and eating cake! They all donated to a very good cause.

Pupils in the Lilac room went to take photos of their houses as part of a topic they are doing in class, Nicola said “don’t ask how long it took to find the houses….we went around in circles.”

Last Friday’s bus trip for the selected pupils in Year 9 was Callum, Sajjida and Safia. They enjoyed having a drink in Asda café, it was very relaxing. After Sajjida and Safia wanted to look at the make-up & DVDs while Callum wanted to look at books.

KS4

Over the last three weeks students in SSC have been producing coil and slab pots made from clay. The two that stood out in particular are Dan’s Winnie the Pooh pot and James’ Angel Mouse pot, but a big well done to everyone.

4M and Mrs Whittaker were making the most of the good weather earlier this week during their horticulture sessions, don't forget we are collecting Morrison's Lets Grow vouchers.

Miss Greenhalgh’s class went shopping to ASDA this week as part of their ASDAN accreditation. They had to find and buy items off a shopping list. When they had finished they went for a drink to the café.

This week SEB made Angel Delight with Miss Higginbottom. They all had a turn at whisking the mixture and then they ate it all up. As you can see the students really enjoyed themselves.

SEB students have also been busy perfecting their banana cake with Mr Brown ready to send to the MacMillan Coffee Morning at Rochdale Town Hall.

School standards

I am delighted with the attendance and the very high standard of uniform this term so far in all key stages. Many thanks to parents and carers for your support!

Student Council elections

The elections of the new Student Council members took place this week I look forward to working with the newly elected representatives to further improve our school.

Parents / Carers of Year 12 students

Invites have been sent out for a special awards presentation to be held on Friday 18 October at the Gracie Fields Theatre, where we will celebrate the achievements in last year’s qualifications from Y11 and Bridging Year.

Year 6 Open Day

We have a very good attendance today from parents and carers of current Y6 pupils who will be starting the transition programme to attend Redwood in September 2014. It was great to see and hear the positive comments from some of the current Y7 pupils who have recently started in school.

Last week we had a total of 135 youngsters who attended the various after school and evening youth clubs provision.
