Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary open day

Date published: 06 October 2013

Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary held an open day today (Sunday 6 October) to raise funds for the sanctuary.

The Sanctuary receives no government funding and relies on the work, support and donations of volunteers.

Jay Fletcher, Trustee of the sanctuary said: “I don’t know exactly how much money we will raise but I would hope for in excess of £2,000.”

Events at the open day included a karate display, fly ball, face painting, glitter tattoos, a variety of stalls and animals on display for all to see.

The sanctuary looks after animals and aims to rehouse as many as possible.

Animals they care for that can be rehoused include dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs. The sanctuary also cares for animals that can't necessarily be homed, like horses and farm animals.

As part of the event, animals were shown off to visitors that could be rehomed. Jay added: “We have brought out cats and dogs every half an hour to show them off for potential rehousing.”

The sanctuary holds open days once every quarter.

“The turnout today has been fantastic. We didn’t expect this many people,” said Jay.

The next open day at the Sanctuary is planned for 1 December 2013.
