Nigel's Volkswagen Golf had overturned and was down an embankment on Halifax Road, near to Blackstone Edge Road and he was trapped inside.
Emergency services attended and sadly Nigel pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.
Police Constable Seamus Toal said: “Our thoughts and sympathies go out to Nigel’s family after he was taken from them so tragically on Friday.
“While his family are too upset at this moment to issue a tribute to Nigel, they would like to say thank you to everyone for the love and support shown to them at this distressing time.
“We are continuing to make enquiries into the circumstances surrounding this collision and any witnesses are asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4742.”
