Fright night

Date published: 30 September 2013

Halloween has arrived early at Hopwood Hall College this year as the VRQ level 3 Media Make-Up students prepare for the fright of their lives.

The group of 18 students will be helping local farmer, Terry Bork, create the annual ‘Farm of Terror’ event at Huttock Top Farm in Bacup from 26 October until 1 November.

The students will be doing all of the special effects make-up for the Halloween event in a real working environment, creating frightful faces and deadly designs on actors and actresses for one of Lancashire’s scariest attractions.

Terry visited the College to brief the group of students on this year’s immersive live experience horror tour and talk them through the scenes that they need to recreate including Devils Den, Psycho City, Chasm of Clowns and the new Slaughter House. They also tried out a few of the ideas during his visit and he was really impressed with their special effects make-up skills.

Terry said: “This is the fourth year of the Farm of Terror event and it’s going to be the biggest yet.

"These students are the most enthusiastic we have ever seen and we can’t wait to see what make up they produce.”

The students will be working hard for the coming weeks to master the skills to be able to carry out this amazingly creative work. As part of their course they will research the characters in the productions and practice the techniques for the event.

Lauron Stirrup, 28, said: “We are super excited and can’t wait to start our work experience. It’s going to be amazing.”
