Superheroes to the rescue?

Date published: 30 September 2013

The latest campaign by the Greater Manchester Casualty Reduction Partnership, Drivesafe has been launched to make pedestrians aware that a simple task such as crossing the road can go drastically wrong.

In the last three years alone within Greater Manchester there have been over 3,600 pedestrian casualties with the biggest causation factor being inattention.

To help highlight this fact and warn pedestrians of the dangers the campaign consists of a series of adverts targeted at pedestrians and motorists to warn them about the consequences of distractions.

Superheroes will be handing out ‘Highway Codes for Mortals’ which will remind people of the dangers and gives advice on how to stay safe when out and about.

Communications Officer Karen Delaney said: "People are still taking risks on our roads. The increased use of things like multi use mobile phones and personal music players can contribute in taking our attention away from the dangers.

"As pedestrians we need to be aware of traffic and the danger it poses. The safest place to cross any road is a pedestrian crossing and where possible we should be using them.

"The campaign is purposefully light-hearted hoping our ‘superheroes’ will help raise some serious issues and make people think twice about taking risks on our roads."
