Adebolajo and Adebowale in court over Lee Rigby murder

Date published: 27 September 2013

The two men accused of murdering soldier Lee Rigby pleaded not guilty when they appeared in court today.

Michael Adebolajo, 28, from Romford, Essex, and Michael Adebowale, 22, from Greenwich, south-east London, are charged with killing Fusilier Rigby as he returned to Woolwich barracks in south-east London on May 22.

Lee died from multiple cut and stab wounds when he was attacked.

Adebolajo is also accused of the attempted murder of two police officers and possession of a firearm - a 9.4mm KNIL model 91 revolver - with intent to cause others to believe that violence would be used.

He denied attempting to murder a police officer on that day, as well as planning to murder a police officer on or before that day.

Adebolajo has asked to be known as Mujaahid Abu Hamza in court, while  Adebowale wants to be called Ismail Ibn Abdullah.

The men appeared via videolink, with Adebowale sitting in front of an HMP Belmarsh sign.

Fusilier Rigby's widow, Rebecca Rigby, was in court for the hearing.

A trial date has been provisionally set for November.
