Royal Mail opening Christmas parcel sort centre in Heywood

Date published: 26 September 2013

Royal Mail is opening a temporary parcel sort centre in Heywood for the Christmas period as part of its festive operation,

The parcel sort centre will employ around 250 people and is scheduled to open in November.

This is the third year that Royal Mail has opened a dedicated network of parcel sort centres. The use of additional temporary parcel sort centres is now an integral part of Royal Mail’s substantial financial commitment in additional resources at Christmas operation to handle the festive mail bag.

Mark Higson, Royal Mail’s Managing Director of Operations and Modernisation, said: “Christmas is the busiest time of year for Royal Mail and our customers. Royal Mail has invested in ten temporary parcel sort centres to increase our scale and improve our flexibility during this important time of year for our customers.

“The use of additional parcel sort centres has proved extremely successful the past two years. They are now an integral part of Royal Mail’s substantial financial commitment in additional resources at Christmas operation to handle the festive mail bag as effectively as possible.”

Council Leader Colin Lambert said: "Employment is much needed and we support this. These are very much needed jobs at a time when families need the money around Christmas and this is very much welcome."
