18m high flue at Falinge Park High School set to be approved

Date published: 24 September 2013

A controversial application to erect an 18m high flue linked to a biomass boiler at Falinge Park High School looks set to be approved at Rochdale Township Planning Committee this evening.

Despite a number of objections from nearby residents, planning officers have recommended approval be granted.

Residents say Falinge Fold is currently under consideration by the Council with a view to affording the area ‘conservation area’ status. The proposed 18m high flue would overlook the conservation area and would have a negative impact and cause pollution issues and noise nuisance to nearby residents.

Planning officers say it is not considered that the proposed 18m high flue would be the determining factor as to whether the area is designated a Conservation Area and the height of the flue is dictated by the Clean Air Act 1993 and DEFRA guidance LAQM TG (09), and by the associated standards and at 18m the height of the new flue will therefore ensure that there is no impact on the local air quality.

Residents are also worried about the 'wood spoke' having an adverse impact on their health but planning officers say at 18m high the emissions from the flue will be safely dispersed and the local air quality will be maintained.

The Planning Officer is satisfied that the application includes sufficient information in order for the Council to make an informed decision.

Rochdale Township Planning Committee will consider the application at a planning meeting this evening (24 September).
