From class room learning to the great outdoors

KYP has successfully completed the first year of its three year Raising Education & Aspiration Project (REAP) with funding from BBC Children in Need. Many young people have now moved on into training, apprenticeships and/or further education.

As part of the offering, in partnership with Rochdale MBC, the Raising Education & Aspiration Project is giving 10 young people the opportunity to enrol for the Bronze level Duke of Edinburgh Award.

The DofE programme is part of the REAP Personal Development, Empowerment & Leadership training which is designed to develop the capacity of young people to become positive role models and to make a positive contribution in their communities by leading change.

As part of their award training, the young people recently attended a camping weekend in the Yorkshire Dales, intended to develop their independence, communication and team working.

For Amaad Shakoor, this was his first time away from home and family. He said: “I have learned many new things. One of the most important skills I learned was determination and not to give up regardless of how challenging the situation and to always find a way to solve any problems. I had an amazing adventure and it was a fun way of learning.”

Zulf Ahmed, KYP Chief Executive, said: “For these young people, achieving this Award will give them skills, confidence and a view on life that everyone is looking for, from employers to colleges and universities, and it will make a difference to other people’s lives in the local community. I would like to say a big thank you to Rochdale Youth Services Duke of Edinburgh Team and wish good luck to all the young people their final Qualifying Expedition.

REAP provides extra support for 14-16 year olds in the following areas:

• Access to GCSE support in 4 main subjects: English, Maths, Science and ICT.
• Personal Development, Empowerment and Leadership sessions (DofE Award).
• Career awareness sessions.

As the project moves into its second year, KYP will be holding an Open Day on Sunday 6 October 2013 between 10.00 and 12.00 at Unique Enterprise Centre, Belfield Road, Rochdale, OL16 2UP where you can find out more and enrol for the sessions.
