The Salvation Army held a community day today (Saturday 21 September) to let the people of Rochdale know that the Salvation Army are still in the borough.

Major Paul Wilson of the Salvation Army said: “We are hoping today is a success. The weather is holding out so that is a good sign.”

The day was free to all who attended and included Skylight Circus, balloon modelling, arts and crafts and performances from the Salvation Army band.

Games of Laser Tag were also on offer to people in attendance.

The Salvation Army emergency van was also on site providing free food and warm drinks.

The event is held once a year and Major Wilson added: “We have been talking about this one for quite a while now so it’s just been about organising the activities and people involved.”

Amanda Williams said: “My family are involved with the Salvation Army so that’s why I’ve come along but they have a lot of good activities for the children.”

Audrey Thompson, who is also part of the church, said: “This is a good idea to help the community get together. It’s nice getting to know people at these events."

Territorial Commander Commissioner Clive Andrews and Divisional Commander Alan Watters also attended the event.

Held at the Memorial Gardens, Rochdale and in the Citadel on Newgate the event was attended by families and children of all ages.
