Skylight Circus receives funding boost

Date published: 13 September 2013

Skylight Circus has been awarded a three year grant of £19,350. The grant will help fund the role of a project coordinator who will teach and perform circus skills to people with disabilities in order to enhance their physical and social wellbeing.

Skylight Circus, based in Rochdale, provides circus workshops and classes for disabled children and adults to help develop confidence, social skills and improve physically. Skylight Circus in Education works with special needs schools to provide recreational and inspiring after school activities, and with adults to provide uplifting and invigorating social activities to improve physical and mental wellbeing.

Lucy Fleet, development worker at Skylight Circus, said, “Many of the people we work with live in some of the most deprived areas in Rochdale where there are few opportunities to take part in healthy and positive activities. We offer a way to engage people in a fun and inspiring way, helping beneficiaries to increase their confidence and build friendships.”

The grant came from the Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales whihc funds local, regional and national charities working to tackle disadvantage.

Yvonne Taylor, grant manager for Lancashire, Cumbria and Manchester at the Foundation, said, “We are proud to award this grant to a charity that is providing innovative and engaging social activities for those who are disabled.

"As one of only a few grant makers to fund core costs we believe this funding will provide lasting change and enable beneficiaries to achieve their goals.”

The Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales supports charities that help disadvantaged people to play a fuller role in the community. Local or regional charities with an income up to £1 million and national charities with an income up to £5 million can find out more about the funding criteria and grant programmes at www.lloydstsbfoundations.org.uk
