Firefighters rescue cat stuck for four days

Date published: 12 September 2013

A ginger tabby cat, whose owners are currently unknown, spent four days, stuck 40ft up a tree. The cat had to be rescued by firefighters in Rochdale after several attempts to get him down had failed.

The cat suffered dehydration and was treated by a vet after the rescue which happened at Laurel Court, Newbold.

Station Manager Ian Tracey said: "The RSPCA asked to use some of our kit so they could go up and put some food on the branch to try and entice the cat. But the cat moved into a more difficult position, so we needed an aerial appliance to reach it.

“The RSPCA, accompanied by a firefighter in the cage of the aerial appliance, was lifted 40ft off the ground and used a net to bring the cat to safety."

The fire service will only help rescue cats if requested to by the RSPCA or if people endanger themselves in an attempt to rescue an animal.

The tabby cat is now being cared for by the RSPCA at Greater Manchester Animal Hospital.

Officers from the RSPAC are now looking for the cat's owners. The cat was not wearing a collar and has not been microchipped.

An RSPCA spokesperson said: “We are very grateful to the fire and rescue service for their assistance with rescuing this cat, which was stuck 40ft up a tree.

"We always hope that they will come down when they get hungry but after four days we really needed to help him out.

"He couldn't be reached by even the longest ladder so the fire service's hydraulic lift had to be used.

"The cat is receiving some TLC at RSPCA Greater Manchester Animal Hospital.

"He wasn't wearing a collar and isn't microchipped so at the moment it's not known if there is an owner out there looking for him.

"He's described as a male tabby.

"Anyone who thinks he might belong to them can contact the hospital on 0300 123 0711.”
