Learn how to cycle in Heywood for free

Date published: 09 September 2013

Free tutorials are taking place in Heywood for beginner cyclists who want to learn how to ride a bike.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is holding four ‘learn to ride’ courses at Queen’s Park from 10am-12pm and 1-3pm on Saturday 14 September and Sunday 6 October.

The courses last for two hours, are for adults over 16 years old and must be booked before attending at http://betterbycycle.eventbrite.com or by phoning 0300 123 1675.

It’s a great opportunity to learn skills including balancing, starting, stopping your bike, using the gears and how to look, signal and turn.

People taking part will be tutored by experts and do not have to bring a bike to the course, although they can, as demonstration bikes will be made available.

The Heywood sessions are just a few among dozens taking place throughout the ten districts of Greater Manchester, including bike maintenance courses.

Councillor Andrew Fender, Chairman of the TfGM Committee, said: “We have grand plans for cycling in Greater Manchester and want to increase usage amongst local communities.

“Part of this is giving new cyclists the basic tools and knowledge to ride a bike confidently and offer further advice for learning.

“These learn to ride courses in Heywood are free, easy to book, will provide expert help and are certainly a couple of hours well spent.”

TfGM is aiming to make Greater Manchester the most cycle-friendly British region outside London.

Greater Manchester has just been awarded £20 million government funding – more than any other area – for cycling education and infrastructure as part of its major 12 year cycling strategy – ‘Velocity 2025’.
