Date published: 06 September 2013

The man who drowned in Hollingworth Lake yesterday (5 September) was aged 31 and a patient of Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust.*

Henry Ticehurst, Medical Director for Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust, commented: “The Trust can confirm that the man was a patient in our care.

"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his family at this time.

"We are working with local authorities to understand the circumstances of this tragic incident.

“Whilst the Trust cannot disclose confidential information about a patient’s condition, we can clarify that the man did not have a learning disability.”

The Trust has also confirmed the man was wearing a life jacket.

Clint Street, Chairman of Link4Life, the Rochdale Boroughwide Cultural Trust, stated: "Link4Life can confirm that the deceased man was part of a group taking part in a regular canoeing session on Hollingworth Lake provided on behalf of the Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust.

"Our sincere sympathies go out to his family and friends at this time. We are now working with the authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.”

It is understood the man fell into the lake whilst on a canoeing trip. Attempts to rescue the man failed and emergency services were brought in to undertake an extensive search of the lake.

Greater Manchester Police said: “Shortly before 2.00pm on Thursday 5 September 2013, police in Rochdale were called to Hollingworth Lake following a report that a man had fallen into the lake.

"Emergency services were in attendance and the body of a 31-year-old man was later found. At this stage, there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

"A joint investigation between GMP and the Health and Safety Executive has been launched.”
