Traffic chaos at Kingsway Park High School

Date published: 06 September 2013

Motorists sit waiting in lengthy traffic jams whilst parents dropped children off at Kingsway Park High School.

Motorists travelling along Turf Hill Road from Kingsway are forced to sit and wait whilst many parents turn into the road to drop children off, make a U turn and then head back onto Kingsway causing slow moving traffic jams in both directions.

One motorist said he waited a quarter of an hour in the traffic before deciding to turn around and head back to Broad Lane.

With the traffic build up, motorists become rude and impatient and fight for their places in the jam. “The parents were turning around and then coming into the queue so people were getting annoyed because they had been waiting and all of a sudden people were pinching spaces” said one motorist.

The school day ended at 2:40pm and traffic conditions did not get any better.

“These are the consequences of the new school. Turf Hill Road can’t handle all of that traffic” said one motorist.

Another lady who got caught up in the traffic herself said: “I am livid. This is ridiculous. These children are old enough to be walking themselves to school.”

Deputy Head Steve Parratt said: “Until parents get into a routine, traffic is going to be an issue. We were out this morning directing cars to drop children off in the lay-by areas and had five members of staff trying to keep people moving. This was probably only an issue for about 10 minutes this morning and it is something we will be working on.

“Over time we are looking to encourage students to use public transport and to use our new cycle scheme. 15 students used the cycle scheme today and as it’s our first day, many year 7 students may have been dropped off by parents and this is something that will hopefully change with routine.”
