Summer football tournaments great platform for youngsters to show off skills and talents

Date published: 27 August 2013

Wardleworth Sports Association (WSA) held two summer football tournaments in the heart of the community.

Teams from all over Rochdale and attracted over 120 players, girls and boys, took part, split into two age groups, under 11s and under 16s.

The atmosphere was supportive and encouraging and a great platform for the youngsters to show off their skills and talents.

The finalists for the under 11s was Smallbridge FC and Classic Seven. The game was very close but a powerful Smallbridge team went through the whole tournament un-beaten. Winners were Smallbridge FC.

The finalists for the under 16s was Dench FC and Classic FC. Dench FC played some fluid football which saw them score early in the game. Classic FC came back strong but Dench FC caught them on the counter attack to take the title.

Azmat Khan, WSA Chairman, said: "WSA has held events for over a decade, but this one was special, as WSA was recognised by Rochdale Township Fund and Link 4 Life to help carry out the wonderful work WSA does. We could for the first time offer the tournament FREE of charge as funding helped purchase trophies and refreshments.

"The kids all loved it, the volunteers were magnificent, and the attitude and behaviour was top class, and showed teams from other areas how to behave and be supportive to one another, a massive well done to them all".
