Woodland Trust Gold Award for Matthew Moss

Date published: 18 June 2013

Matthew Moss has been awarded the Gold Award by the Woodland Trust on the Green Tree Schools Award Programme.

This is due to the amount of tree planting the school has carried out over the last few years, most of which has been in the local community.

The Year 10 group have been undertaking the John Muir Award for outdoor learning. They are in Mrs Miller’s science class and along with Miss Lewer’s Year 10s planted hundreds of trees in Springfield Park over winter. It is also as a result of the work we have carried out in Alkrington Woods and Hopwood Woods and Healey Dell Nature Reserve.

Mr Roy Down, Outdoor Learning Co-ordinator at Matthew Moss said: “This award came out of the blue; I knew we had reached the Silver Award, but the Gold Award came as a pleasant surprise.

“Our learners have been instrumental in the creation of the community tree nursery in Springfield Park. This project has attracted a lot of interest around Rochdale, so it is nice to get some recognition for our efforts.

“Matthew Moss are leading the way with outdoor learning and environmental projects and we are beginning to see some real benefits in our parks and green spaces.”
