Wardle High student dives deep for success!

Date published: 24 April 2013

India Law, a Year 8 pupil from Wardle High School has been following her passion for diving over the Easter holidays.

India who wants to become a Marine Biologist travelled to North Scotland to complete a Scuba Cold Water/ Dry Suit Specialisation, as a compulsory part of her (PADI) Junior Master Scuba Diver Training. Whilst she was there she also qualified as an AWARE diver.

Despite the unusually low temperature (4 degree water) India managed to complete the training to become a qualified Junior Dry Suit/Cold Water Diver, and she is now able to dive in cold open water with an adult.

To become an AWARE diver India had to take part in two lectures on how to be an AWARE diver and learn about the issues surrounding project AWARE and coral conservation.

Project AWARE Foundation is a growing movement of scuba divers protecting the ocean planet. Over the past two decades of underwater conservation they have argued that divers are the true leaders in ocean protection and they have millions of divers across the globe supporting the foundation. With new programs and more online resources than ever before, Project AWARE supports an unprecedented global movement of divers. They focus on two major ocean issues – Sharks in Peril and Marine Debris.

Two years ago India discovered Scuba Diving in the Maldives and having really enjoyed her experience she qualified as an open water diver, doing four open water dives and an exam in the Maldives in December 2012. While she was there she also did her Nitrox course involving an exam and one dive. India then did her Advanced Open Water Certificate where she had to complete five dives. India is planning to go to Easter Island one Christmas to get another speciality towards her Master Scubadiver.

India Law says: "When I am older I would like to be a Marine Biologist specialising in coral conservation or the protection of sharks. Wardle High has helped me by giving me the time off school in order to do these courses and giving me a sporting dispention so it doesn’t affect my attendance."

Mr Anthony Taylor says: "India is an extremely brave, hardworking and talented young lady and it is not surprising she has gained so many amazing achievements in the world of underwater diving. India’s drive and determination to overcome the many challenges which underwater diving has to offer and then to excel within this activity is truly an inspiration to us all. India is undoubtedly a star in the making and Wardle high school look forward to hearing of India’s future conquests and successes."
