Schoolgirl Emma packs a pretty punch

Date published: 22 March 2008

It is not a demure sport, but schoolgirl Emma Harrison aims to become a knockout in the world of boxing.

And with women’s boxing still a possibility of becoming an Olympic sport in 2012, the 16-year-old, who initially trained at Hamer Amateur Boxing Club, in Rochdale, but has since joined Middleton Select dreams of punching her way to glory in that event.

Mum Julie confessed to being “horrified” when her teenage daughter declared her intention to take up the pugilistic pastime.

Julie explained: “I must admit my husband Dave and I were horrified when Emma told us she wanted to take up boxing.

“But, we are pleased she has an interest and training three nights each week gives her discipline and keeps her fit.

“We are not worried about safety as amateur boxers wear head guards.”

It is two years since Royton-based Emma began sparring and not long ago she had her first bout - which she lost - in Wales.

Such is her interest in the sport that Emma, who is currently taking her GCSE exams at Royton and Crompton School, is considering continuing her full-time education at the Hopwood Hall Boxing Academy.

Julie says the biggest problem is that there are so few girls and women boxing and it is difficult to find opponents. Indeed, Emma is the only female member at her club.
