Music for Youth and Wardle High School’s Spring Concert end a Musical March

Date published: 09 April 2013

The end of March saw Wardle High School host two musical events; The Spring Concert and the Music for Youth Regional Festival. As well as being a strong performing academic school Wardle High School has a strong tradition in the performing arts, but particularly in brass band music. The school has several groups and bands and they also support local primary schools.

On Friday 22 March seven musical groups took part in our Spring Concert. Despite the snowy weather, there was a large turnout and the audience were treated to an evening of energetic, entertaining and musical performances. The evening started with the Youth Band, the Choir and the Training Band conducted by Lee Rigg, Jocelyn Lavin and Gwen Smith respectively.

After the interval there were performances by the Wind Band, Folk Group, Junior Band and Intermediate Band conducted by Jane Conway, Cliff Woodworth, Gwen Smith and Lee Rigg. A good night was had by all and money was raised during the evening and from ticket sales for the Rainbow Trust, a charity that supports families who have a child with a life threatening or terminal illness.

The following day Wardle High School hosted the Music for Youth Regional Festival. Due to the bad weather there was a chance the event would be cancelled. Fortunately the event was still able to go ahead and our musical mentors, Sam Dunkley and Chris Walters, arrived and seventeen musical groups performed throughout the day.

The groups comprised of three from Littleborough Community School, two from Smithy Bridge Primary School, two from St James' C of E Primary School and five from Wardle High School. In addition groups had travelled from Middleton, Stockport, Crewe, Mossley and Darwen to participate. The day went fantastically resulting in constructive and supportive comments by the music mentors.

Wardle High School would like to thank everyone who took part and helped to make both days a success.
