Doing something funny for money

Date published: 18 March 2013

Staff and students at Hopwood Hall College spent a day doing some rather funny things for money for Comic Relief on Red Nose Day.

Activities at the Middleton Campus included throwing wet sponges at various members of staff and students - £1 for two throws; Principal Derek O’Toole, was, for some reason, target of choice amongst many of the students. Also, game for a laugh was Student Governor, Muhammed Riaz who allowed a whole bucket of water to be poured over him at the cost of £5 a go, earning an extra £15 which learners clubbed together for!

Very brave Ryan Rowson from Middleton, had both legs waxed front and back to the knee at the Rochdale Campus by the lovely beauty students there. The painful experience made £108.20 in sponsorship and donations.

Perhaps even braver, Adeel Iftikhar from Rochdale, shaved his hair off for charity. With sponsors and donations, Adeel and his campaign team have raised £103.43 so far.

Students and staff did a bake sale on Tuesday and Thursday at the Middleton Campus and also took orders this week for cakes to be delivered to staff rooms. Business student Jodie Cassell from Rochdale did all the baking, which was very labour-intensive. Jodie and the team of ladies promoted and sold hundreds of cakes and 51 red noses too. They made a tasty profit of £103.66.

A group of business students at the College’s Middleton Campus, including Marima Malik from Rochdale offered henna painting. Marima and her fellow students raised £73.

Jordon Fox from Oldham spent one day at the Rochdale Campus and one at the Middleton Campus dressed as a lady. He and his team have made their money through sponsorship and donations. Business Studies tutor Elaine Morley said: “They currently have made £124.63 and are awaiting another £60 in sponsorship which equals a massive £180!

“He was obviously very popular and definitely lived up to the theme of doing something funny for money!”

Elaine summed up the week by saying: “In running these events, the business students not only passed one of their marketing assignments by creating a campaign, they also developed their interpersonal, planning, organising and team working skills. And, of course, they also raised lots of money for a good cause!”

In total, students from the business department raised £760 and this figure is expected to go higher.

Over in Rochdale, apprentices and staff donned red noses and trekked the streets of Rochdale for donations. They spent the morning visiting employers and speaking to local residents in and around the Rochdale campus. They managed to raise £150.00 from generous local people.

Apprentice Jack said "There was a great vibe in the town and local shoppers were in clear support of the charity. Thanks to everyone. "
