Romans of Shawforthia

Date published: 15 February 2013

Class 3 at St John with St Michael CE Primary School, Moss Side Street, Shawforth have celebrated in true Roman style with a day filled with Roman themed work and play including decorating Roman Mosaic tiles, learning Latin, modelling sea creatures out of clay and decorating with mosaic gems, making Roman shields out of papier mache, Role Play and Dressing up as Roman solidiers, servants, priestesses and Roman masters or ladies.

The children also brought items in for a Roman feast in the afternoon such as fresh fruit, home made spiced bread, flavoured cheeses, smoked salmon and dips (they didn't quite fancy eating roasted doormouse!).

Trinity's mum made a recipe she had found called "Patina" it was delicious and really sweet.

Mr Hickman (student teacher) wanted to do something memorable based on their history topic that would ensure both he, and the children of course, had a fabulous time in his last week st St John with St Michael where he has been on placement for 5 months.

The topic of The Romans has been linked throughout the curriculum and the Roman day followed on nicely from Class 3's trip to Ribchester a few weeks ago.

The day of Roman fun and games was finished off nicely with a class assembly presented to the whole school sharing facts and information the children had found out during their study of the topic and also a song. The children also had a slideshow with photographs from their trip.
