Police and Crime Commissioner and Chief Constable sign public contract

Greater Manchester’s Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd and Chief Constable Sir Peter Fahy met with the Policing Minister Damian Green MP and shared with him their public contract with each other and the communities of Greater Manchester.

The joint statement issued today is the basis of their contract with each other and the public about how they will work independently and together to protect community safety and build public confidence. Tony and the Chief Constable also discussed how the Leveson report has impacted on public confidence. Although the grossly unacceptable practices highlighted are mainly practices in the Metropolitan police and national media they have discussed how to increase confidence in light of Leveson. Tony also reiterated his commitment to maintaining the operational independence of Greater Manchester Police.

Tony Lloyd said: “I am today giving clear commitments about how I as Commissioner will work with the Chief Constable towards making Greater Manchester Police the best Force in the country. Although Greater Manchester Police had nothing to fear in the Leveson inquiry I am proud today to say that Greater Manchester Police is the first Force in the country to announce that it will be ‘Leveson compliant’.”

Chief Constable, Sir Peter Fahy, said: "Policing can only be effective if it is accountable to the public for the money it spends and the considerable powers it holds over the lives of ordinary people. The public must believe that their police force is working for them. The arrival of the police and crime commissioner allows us to look for new ways of strengthening that accountability and to ensure the views of the public and the staff of GMP are heard. I welcome this public pledge as a joint commitment to openness and transparency."
