St Cuthbert's Advent charity work

Date published: 28 November 2012

All year groups are busy preparing for their Advent charity work. We have already sent off 115 Christmas shoe boxes to Belarus and now we are working to help needy people much closer to home. We are assisting the Rochdale Food Bank – any donations of tins and packet foodstuff will be greatly received by the RE department.

All year groups have been invited to take part in the recent Rochdale Schools and Greater Manchester Catholic Cup Badminton tournaments. All teams have given a good account of themselves and the Under 14’s Girls Badminton achieved extremely well by winning the Rochdale School tournament.

The handball season has begun in earnest and, having had some sneaky coaching from Spanish International Mr Santana, the Under 13s girls’ team won the competition last Monday. The Under 15s team followed suit with the ‘A team’ finishing in first place and the St Cuthbert’s’ B team’ finishing in 2nd place. The boys’ competitions are this week and early next week, so we look forward to further success!

The Under 13s girls’ football team took centre stage at the recent Community Cup final at half time in the Rochdale FC v Bristol Rovers. The girls were not overawed at playing on the Spotland pitch and despite going down 1-0 to Hollingworth BEC to a wonderful goal, Cuthbert’s managed to battle back and win the game 2-1 with goals from captain Katie Halligan. A special mention must also go to Bene Lawal for her outstanding display in the goal.

Well done form 7.8, the weekly attendance challenge winners with 99.5%. Congratulations also to Chloe Millen, form 7.10, the winner of the weekly achievement points award. Mrs Russell presented an assembly to year 7 pupils about Bookbuz. All Year 7 pupils will receive a free book of their choice. All year 7 pupils who have shown exemplary attitudes in the classroom, and not received a C3 or C4 this term, are to be rewarded with a disco party at the end of term.

Various year group and whole school activities and clubs are available at lunchtime. Please see notices around school for more information. Year 7 Homework club is open every lunch time in L3 with Mrs Whitmore and Mrs Rushton. Year 10 & 11 English Coursework Catch Up is available every Thursday at 3.15 in J10.

Our themes for this week were Advent and Refugees. Our Enterprise Capability was Personal Responsibility. The Year 7 focus for this term is teamwork. Pupils’ Current Progress and Attitude to Learning is being recorded by all subject teachers next week. This informs parents of their children’s attitude in the classroom which affects their rate of progress as well as their actual achievements. This information will be sent to parents before the Christmas break.
