Jamie Kelly visits Redwood School

Ex-pupil Jamie Kelly, 4 Gold Medals!

We are delighted to tell you that Jamie Kelly, has won four gold medals in the first Special Olympics World Aquatics Invitation held in Puerto Rico. Jamie came into school to show off his medals after representing Special Olympics GB.

Jamie trains each day including open water training on a Tuesday. Jamie is a great role model to our young people. He will be attending our special Achievement Assembly on Monday 10 December as a guest to talk about his experiences.

Egypt Day

After the week in Egypt we have now made a formal link with our school in Alexandria. We received a fantastic welcome and we had the opportunity of watching and taking part in lots of lessons – PE, Sports, English, Maths and Drama to name a few.

Our link school, El Zaeem El Sadaat Preparatory School for boys caters for 708 students and the headteacher and senior PE teacher will be visiting Redwood in February next year! It was an amazing experience which we will be sharing with our youngsters soon.

We are holding our `Egypt Day' on 6 December at which all our students can take part in a variety of suitable activities such as traditional Egyptian costumes, an Egyptian mummy, menus, games, watching a film of our link school and producing Egyptian art work. More details will be circulated.

Health and Well Being Club for pupils

You may be aware that a new club has started! The Health and Well Being Club for our young people takes place each Thursday evening, 6pm – 8pm . Why not let your son / daughter come along and take part in a variety of health and fitness related activities for pupils of all abilities, meet friends and have some fun.

2012 Legacy and planning for 2016 in Rio!

We have been invited by 'Get Set' to create our time capsule of our wonderful experiences of 2012. This is also a fun way for all our young people in Years 7 and 8 to support those in 2016 to celebrate the games in Rio! I know there will be some great ideas put forward by staff and students.

Parental Survey 2012

A reminder that we are asking parents and carers to complete the Parental Survey and return it to school. Your views are vital to us.

Christmas Fair

Please note a change of date: FRIDAY 7 DECEMBER 10.00 - 12.00. All funds this year will be put towards purchasing a hoist for inclusive use at Oulder Hill Leisure Centre Complex and a wheelchair roundabout.

Key stage 4 news

18 of our students attended the Playground to Podium event at Kingsway School. Sports included rowing, dodge ball, boccia, new age kurling and gymnastics. We all had a great day and some students were pinpointed forfurther development.

We are keen to promote healthy living. Students also currently studying First Aid in order to achieve their BTEC. This week the cook and eat group made spaghetti bolognaise. The aim was to use 5 different types of veg.

Key Stage 3 news

Some pupils went to Newbank Garden Centre looking for ideas for Christmas crafts.

The Christmas train has arrived at Redwood year 8/9 red are embarking and visiting Christmas celebrations through Europe.

Another group of Year 7 students used the pillar drill in DT for the first time. The end product will be a key ring out of plastic. The lilac room completed their weekly shop in the supermarket for cookery and tuck shop goodies.

Year 8/9 Green have been using natural materials to make snowmen, they demonstrated great perseverance, patience and fine motor skills, they made some to sell at the Christmas Fair.

6th Form News

Declan, Joshua, Nathan and Jake worked hard in preparing their lunch which consisted of Chicken stir-fry with noodles and ginger. They sliced, diced and prepared all the ingredients independently and were very pleased with the tasty results.

Maths group 1 went to Asda to complete some evidence worksheets on ‘Using numbers’ for their accreditation. The students worked really hard, finding different foods and checking the number of calories. They did calorie comparisons on drinks, biscuits and frozen meals and this meant using their addition and subtraction skills. They also bought a drink in the café and sat chatting with their friends.

Michele, Tutor said: “I was so proud of the group as their behaviour was impeccable and the work they produced was of a high standard.”
