Revamped Rochdale Pioneers museum proving popular

Date published: 07 November 2012

The revamped Rochdale Pioneers museum has had 1,361 visitors in its first week of opening.

The museum re-opened on Monday 29 October following a two-year revamp and tourists from as far afield as Japan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Brazil have visited.

The museum is still housed in the original 1844 co-operative shop on Toad Lane where the movement started, but modern features have been added, including interactive displays, a lecture room and a cinema screen.

Museum Manager Jenny Broadbent, said: “We had an incredible opening week and we were very privileged to welcome so many visitors from across the world. We also received many visits from local people who were happy and proud to see their heritage on display.”

Groups looking to explore Rochdale borough’s heritage on a guided tour can create their own itinerary from a selection including the Town Hall, the Pioneer’s Museum, Touchstones, the Greater Manchester Fire Museum and the Middleton Golden Cluster.
