RBH 'It’s Our Neighbourhood’ project wins the National Housing Federation’s ‘Safer Streets’ award
RBH ‘It’s Our Neighbourhood’ project has won the National Housing Federation’s ‘Safer Streets’ award and is the overall winner from the North West.
‘It’s Our Neighbourhood’ has worked with more than 1,100 children from the age of 8 to 14 to encourage them to make the right choices and to steer away from drugs, alcohol, crime and anti-social behaviour. Workshops are held in schools across the borough where pupils learn about the stark reality of day-to-day life for a prisoner and what could happen if they end up in the criminal justice system.
RBH’s commitment to long term intervention impressed the judges, with the project being described as "truly excellent" and "a fantastic example of how education and involvement of young people can shape their futures and life choices".
Daniel Klemn, National Housing Federation North West Lead Manager, said: “Rochdale Boroughwide Housing’s project shows how housing associations go far beyond providing people with homes, they help residents live life to the full and create healthy and happy neighbourhoods.
"I wish Rochdale Boroughwide Housing luck as they head to the competition national finals.”
RBH believes that making children more aware of the impact of their behaviour, not only in a negative way, but how they can make a positive difference, is the key to instilling the right behaviours from an early age.
Ruth Sillence, Communities First Coordinator, said: “Our long term commitment to working with children throughout their school careers is what makes this project so special. It is so important that from a young age, children are educated about making the right life choices.
"I am delighted that our hard work and commitment to young people has been recognised.”
