RBH apprentices on task
Date published: 06 November 2012
Fourteen new trainees and apprentices at Rochdale Boroughwide Housing (RBH) are already on task helping communities across the Borough following their appointment in September.
Nine trainees and five apprentices have started work across the organisation following a rigorous assessment process that attracted over 60 applicants for Trainees and Apprentices.
The new apprentices include joiner Curtis Green (17) from Healey, who fulfilled a lifelong ambition when he joined RBH. He said: “I’ve always wanted to work with my hands and I’ve really enjoyed the practical, hands-on aspects of the job. I’d like to carry on with RBH when I complete my apprenticeship”
Curtis and his four fellow apprentices are studying at Oldham College, and are working in electrics, central heating and joinery. Curtis will graduate with an NVQ Level 3 in Carpentry and Joinery at the end of his three-year apprenticeship.
The nine new trainees are hoping to follow in the footsteps of last year's cohort, of whom over 80% secured permanent employment with RBH. Many are studying for relevant qualifications based on their post and previous experience.
Jonny Carroll, 22 and from Milnrow, has joined RBH as a trainee neighbourhood housing officer. Alongside his work at Freehold Housing Office, Jonny is studying for an NVQ in Housing at Hopwood Hall College, and his 12-month traineeship is supported by the Groundwork Trust.
Jonny Carroll said: “I was unemployed for a year until RBH gave me this opportunity. It is hard work but I’ve enjoyed it, especially when we have been able to resolve a problem for a tenant. I’d like to stay in the housing sector at the end of my year as a trainee.”
The RBH Learning and Development team have provided additional support to the trainees and apprentices during induction and training.
Alison Gregory, Learning & Development Manager, said: “RBH is committed to helping local people into employment and supporting local communities in getting into work. I’m delighted with our trainees and apprentices who after just a few short weeks are already making a huge difference in our local communities. The skills they are learning and qualifications they are earning will provide a great start for their career, and I have every confidence that they have a bright future ahead”
